Description

Where the sparkling waters of the Arkansas River tumble along through the Rocky Mountains, the Sweetwater River Ranch waits to become your secluded Colorado mountain vacation home. Located on Hwy 50 in Texas Creek, half way between Salida and Canon City, this seasonal campground is open from April 28 through October 31 and offers a convenient online reservation to help you plan your trip. With stunning views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this Royal Gorge area site offers the best of mountain living, with resort-like amenities.

For your accommodations, choose from comfortable motel rooms, deluxe, camping and pioneer cabins, or spacious RV and tent sites. The small, personal camp is the perfect retreat when you really want to get away from the bustle and hassle of the real world. Encompassing a half mile of the Arkansas River and 31 acres of riparian wildlife refuge, this is one of the best places in the country to view wildlife, enjoy kayaking, hiking, biking, skiing and rock climbing. The whitewater rafting on the Arkansas is ideal, and for fishing, you can't beat the river's ratio of 4,000 brown trout per mile!

While many exciting attractions lie in close proximity to the ranch, be sure to take a day trip to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, where a two hour ride will take you over 24 miles of breathtaking scenery in the 1,000 foot deep Royal Gorge. Another great excursion is to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, which is the world's highest suspension bridge hanging 1,053 feet and stretching a quarter mile in length over the Arkansas River. These are only a few of the amazing adventures available in the area, and the Sweetwater River Ranch is the perfect base camp from which to experience them all.

Not with small kids...lesson learned.

Overall, the campground was amazingly beautiful. Very unique and charming. Staff and facilities were really great. Our family goes camping with our three small children but this was our first time at this site. We won't be able to return until they're quite a bit older. The bridge was not safe for kids to be walking across. They could have easily fallen through the makeshift siding. This made the entire trip pretty stressful. Also trying to lug supplies back and forth was somewhat complicated, as it was extremely possible to roll the handcart right off the sides of the bridge. There is a construction site type of plastic netting that is tied down in a few spots along the bridge with zip ties. In between the large spaces the netting just flapped in the breeze, with plenty of room for anything to fall through. The site is beautiful, the river is gorgeous and there were rafters floating by all day. At night the river sounds are so nice to lay and listen to. We would most likely return, sans children the next time. The bridge was just too much for this mama to handle with the kids and all. IT was not a safe camping situation for small kiddos. I wish I would had known this before we went camping.

Each year, my husband meet up with his brother and sister-in-law for a week of hiking and brewery tours. This year Sweetwater River Ranch provided the perfect location. It was quiet, accommodated two tents/4 adults for an excellent price and offered all the amenities we needed (full bathrooms, privacy, ice/corner store). While it sits on the highway, the road was quiet at night and the river did a great job of covering whatever noise there might have been. The tent sites easily accommodated our 2 4-person tents. The service was great - very helpful and the bathrooms were always clean. We'd definitely stay here again.

This is a great campground. Most of the tent sites are on the other side of the river so it makes it a unique experience. The campground has a nice backdrop of mountains to look at. You do have to walk back and forth across a foot bridge if you want to use the facilities but camping right next to the river was worth it!!! The owners and staff were very friendly. We would highly recommend this campground.
