Fantastic as Always

As always the accommodations were beyond compare!!! Immaculate & all the "comforts of home" (deluxe cottage) whether it was plates, pots, coffee pot, corkscrew (we all forget those at least once!)to the staff always being there for you. We were going to be late arriving & when we called to inform them of same, the answering machine was on(we were concerned we couldn't get into the cabin)I left a message & to our surprise they called us back!!Not only on the number listed on the reservation (home) but, our cell phone!! If you miss going to a lobster pound don't fret, Smuggler's Den has them for sale in the office!!..you can purchase the lobsters & they even have large pots to cook them in!!This is our second stay at Smuggler's Den & I assure you, it won't be the last!!

Great and easy reservation process. Super polite staff, and very helpful. The facilities were clean, and lots of freebies that were greatly appreciated. Decent firewood for sale, not the driest, but all hardwood, and well split. I would definitely come back again!

Great family campground

SMuggler's Den was a great campground for my family. Not too big, and not too small. There was plenty for the kids to do; playground, clean swimming pool. It was close to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park for us to visit and explore every day, but far enough away to have quiet peaceful nights by the campfire. The site were a nice size, you did not feel like you were on top of your neighbor. The facilities were spotless. The staff was so friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend Smugglers Den to all our friends and would return again on our next trip to Maine.

We've been coming to MDI for years and we ALWAYS stay at Smugglers Den.....by far the best campground around AND it' on the quietside. Oktoberfest and The Garlic Festival are always fun. Rain has always been very accomidating when we make reservations and we always get one of our favorite sites.
You cant miss with this one...........

This campground is loaded with uncut stumps in which most of our campers have tripped over or even have fell mostly injuring themselves because of these stumps. Security is also an issue since the staff is more concerned with quietness as oppose to vehicles entering in at night with no visible tags to identify them.

On the Quiet Side

We loved camping there, warm swim pool, nice lots with all ammenities, although high in price for some lots, it is near a lot of coastal sites + you can ride the free bus to anywhere on the Island.

the only place

We have stayed at Smugglers Den many times in the past 40 years. It is the only place for us. At first we camped in a tent with our children, now they return with their campers and we stay in a rustic cabin. It is nice to return someplace that is family friendly and be welcomed by name. The pool and playground are an exceptional addition for both kids and adults. The bathroom and shower facilities could use some updating but they are adequate. It is nice to have a trail directly from Smugglers Den to the Echo Lake Beach. Another trail will take you to a fire road that leads to Long Pond. This will take some time so don't forget the water.
While in Southwest Harbor take some time to visit Beals Lobster Pier for a lobster dinner then the Quietside Cafe for great ice cream treats.
And don't forget a visit to the Bass Harbor Light House. For those days you want to be doing something but are not up to a long hike try Ship Harbor or Wonderland Trails, you will be glad you did.
Of course, Acadia National Park is the main attraction. Find a parking spot and walk on the rocks along the ocean. It is nice to take a lawn chair and a good book and just relax while listening to the waves and sea gulls. If you have the time, drive to Winter Harbor at Schoodic for a different view of the beautiful Maine coast.
Smugglers Den is on the quiet side of this island. After a day of shopping, hiking, driving and sightseeing it is a wonderful and relaxing place to return for the night.

This family fun campground is located within the bus route to all attractions in Acadia National Park! I highly recommend this campground. They have a beautiful heated pool and excellent new playground for the kiddos to play on! Enjoy

Good bang for your buck

Smugglers Den is a very laid back campgroung. The campground staff people were very friendly and helpful. My wife and I wanted to cook lobster at our campsite, but we didn`t have the supplies to do that. The staff provided us with a boiling pot and everything we needed to cook two lobsters, including the salt for the water. They even gave us their recipe. There is a grocery store very close to the campground, so restocking our supplies was no problem. We enjoyed Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor and the various bay areas. We trailered our motorcycle and rode most, if not all, of the less traveled roads around the campground. All in all, we enjoyed the entire vacation.
