Description

You can see for miles in the beautiful flatlands of North Dakota when staying at Camp on the Heart, off of I-94 in Dickinson. Situated on the banks of the historic Heart River, with a convenient online reservations system, the camp welcomes RVers, as well as tent campers and is open April 15 through October 15. The cottonwood trees sway overhead as guests cast their lines for walleye and perch just steps from the campsites, take a dip in the solar heated pool or watch for fantastic North Dakota wildlife, including prairie dogs, deer, waterfowl and songbirds.

A unique feature of the Camp on the Heart is The Summer Kitchen, a casual, open-air dining area serving groups of 12 or more, and the staff will even do the cooking for you from a menu of your selection with a two day reservation. When you are ready to go exploring off site, be sure to visit Dickinson for great shopping, restaurants, steakhouses, antique stores and museums. The Dakota Dinosaur Museum is one of Dickinson’s most popular destinations, featuring many exhibits, including a Triceratops skeleton, and information on over 800 species, plus rocks, minerals and species.

Another attraction nearby is the Assumption Abbey of Richardton, which was completed in 1909 and has 52 stained glass windows, lofty arches, many saint paintings as well as a carved crucifix. Now home to 30 monks, Abbey-made woodcrafts, pottery, and wines and honey are available in the gift shop. When venturing out of camp, don’t forget to take an unforgettable drive on the Enchanted Highway, a 32 mile stretch of county road with many roadside sculptures, including the world’s largest grasshopper and other larger than life pieces of art that can’t help but catch your eye .. all within a few miles of the quiet serenity of the Camp on the Heart.

Holiday on the Heart

We had occasion to stay at Camp on the Heart near the end of August. We were visiting from Manitoba, Canada and this was the first leg of our 2 week vacation. The campground had been recommended by a local business and we were not disappointed. We travel with a 40ft fifth wheel and we found that the sites were plenty large enough to accommodate our rig. Our site was located alongside the river and we had lots of shade to protect us from the sun. Even though the campground was full when we stayed, it was very quite. Overall we enjoyed the peacefulness of the campground and it was close enough to shopping when we wanted. Definitely a place to return to.

We camped at Camp on the Heart at Dickinson, ND. Our purpose for being there was to watch our grandson play baseball. I was a very busy place when we drove in and we wondered what it would be like come nighttime. To our amazement and surprise - it was a wonderful, relaxing and restful experience. The park was quiet despite the number of campers. There was traffic and people but everyone was respectful and polite and I owe this to the respect demanded by the owners to provide a pleasant experience for everyone. There was even a section provided for people with horses and horse trailers and yet we never were disturbed by their presence. It was a beautiful weekend with quiet peaceful nights and even though we were very close to the city it seemed like were were out in the open - with no city noises to be heard. The sky was big and open and beautiful. The city of Dickinson is inundated with people from all over the country who have come to work in the oilfields so may be harder to get reservations there this summer. All in all it was a great weekend and we would without a doubt go there again. The facilities there were clean and well cared for. The camping spot we had was kind of sitting out in the open but was almost right on the bank of the river so that made up for it. I do not think that you would be disappointed by camping at this campground - and enjoying the wonders of a North Dakota experience.
